Course
Synopsis:
This presentation examines the specialized skill of microscopic parasite identification, contrasting five Plasmodium species (including P. knowlesi) with the morphologically similar Babesia. It highlights distinguishing features in trophozoites, schizonts, and gametocytes that underpin accurate diagnosis. In the era of molecular testing, these morphological markers remain a critical foundation, strengthening the reliability and persuasiveness of diagnostic reports. The talk also addresses stain selection and quality control, evaluates parasitemia in P. falciparum and P. knowlesi, and outlines strategies to detect and eliminate mixed infections.
