Despite the technological advances of MALDI-TOF and other rapid microbiological techniques, morphology remains an indispensable tool in clinical microbiology, especially in blood culture-positive smears. This seminar draws from real-world diagnostic experiences to emphasize how morphological assessment continues to inform and shape patient management with precision and urgency.
Participants will explore:
- High-impact morphological clues that aid early identification of critical pathogens such as Listeria monocytogenes, Brucella spp., and Trichosporon spp.
- Morphology-guided decision making—how familiarity with bacterial shapes prevents misreporting and enhances clinical accuracy.
- Integrating rapid tests like India ink, urine antigen, and multiplex PCR platforms to complement morphology-based hypotheses.
- Alert-worthy organisms and rare but essential finds such as Nocardia and Talaromyces marneffei.
- Discerning true pathogens from contaminants—a vital step in avoiding overdiagnosis and improper treatment.
